“Echo Stratum” is a sound furniture based on “universal human activities” such as people staying and walking in public spaces.

Public furniture, independent by nature while harmonizing with the environment, does not leave traces (memories) of its users. Re-examining the place’s  DNA of “conservation and memory ” and “physical transformation due to the flow of time”, give a unique and important perspective to this event.

Through Echo Stratum, a public piece of furniture in a public space, people’s actions are recorded and stored as sound signs, and digitally processed to make audible the series of processes that transform over time like tape echoes. It envelops the surroundings with the sound of vague cloud-like signs. It is a sustainable circulation system that generates by itself the sound environment of the place as if it interacted with people’s activities. “Echo Stratum” where people can sit, rest and admire the scenery, gives us an opportunity to rediscovering our own relationships with the continuity of the city, people, places and architecture, in a relaxed state.

『Echo Stratum』は公共空間における人々の滞在や歩行といった普遍的な「人間のアクティビティ」に基づいたsounding furnitureです。

本来、環境と調和しつつも、独立した在り方であるパブリックファニチャーには、利用者の痕跡（記憶）は残りません。「記録や記憶」、「経年変化による物理的変容」という場所のDNAを見つめ直し、私たちはこれを独自性を持った大切なコンテクストの一つであると捉えます。

公共空間におけるパブリックファニチャーとしての『Echo Stratum』を通じた人々のアクティビティが音の気配として記録・蓄積され、デジタルプロセッシングによってテープエコーのように時間経過と共に変容してゆく一連のプロセスを可聴化し、ぼんやりとした雲のような気配としてのサウンドが辺りを包みます。それは人々のアクティビティと対話をするようにその場の音環境を自ら生成してゆくサスティナブルな循環システムです。腰掛けて休憩したり、景色を眺めたりと、人々が自由に佇む『Echo Stratum』を通じて、街と人、場所と建築との連続性の中に自らとの関係性を再発見し、リラックスした状態で思いを巡らすきっかけを与えます。

The pattern on the side is made with sawdust created during wood processing. The technic used is unique. As a stratum that  “accumulates memories”, the layer, consist of piles of sawdust coming from various tree species, and gives a different impression according to the angle and the time of observation. 

With a Voronoi form that has no direction, it embodies the “organicity” created by the natural world and offers us the opportunity to gather freely, sit down and rest, or stand on it to admire the scenery.

In Japan, there is a word “Kokemusu”, which refers to the large span of time it took the moss to cover the entire surface of a rock, and which by extent, can mean “eternity” in the Japanese aesthetic sense. “Echo Stratum” makes you feel “the eternal time” and the history created there by people gathered in a place.

特徴的な模様の側面には、木材加工の際に発生するおが屑を使用した独自の手法を施しています。「記録の蓄積」を可視化する地層のように、様々な樹種のおが屑の堆積からなる表層は、角度によって異なる複雑なレイヤーと「経年変化」により豊かな表情を見せます。

方向性を持たない隆起したかのような形状はボロノイ形状となっており、自然界が作り出す「有機性」を体現し、腰掛けて休憩したり、立ち上がって見下ろしたりと、人々が自由に集う多様なきっかけをもたらします。

日本には「苔生（こけむ）す」という言葉があり、これは苔が一面に生すまでに長い時間がかかることから生まれた表現で、日本の美意識にある「悠久の時間」を表わします。『Echo Stratum』は、人々が場所に集いそこで育まれていく歴史の重み、その「悠久の時間」を感じさせます。

INVISI will present “KO-TONE Spiral Xylophone” one of its most representative pieces of work of its sound sculpture and “Echo Stratum” the new sound furniture  at the National Archives of France, located in the center of Paris, Marais, during the Paris Design Week 2023.

INVISIでは、Paris Design Week 2023にて、代表作の1つでもあるSound Sculpture “KO-TONE Spiral Xylophone”と共に、 新作のSounding furniture “Echo Stratum”を、パリ中心部「マレ地区」の歴史のある施設 「フランス国立公文書館博物館」にて展示致します。
